ATHLETIC ARTS CENTER’S PRODUCTION OF THE LIGHTNING THIEF: THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES IS OPEN TO PERFORMERS AGES 10 YEARS AND UP.
The gods are real … Like the Greek gods!” We are delighted that you’re interested in auditioning for Athletic Arts Center’s production of The Lightning Thief (TYA). Based on the beloved novel by Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief tells the story of Percy Jackson, son of Greek god Poseidon, as he sets out on a hero’s journey of self-discovery, grappling with monsters and mysterious mayhem along the way.
The Lightning Thief (TYA) is a story about identity, family, and community. Percy’s experience is one that resonates across cultures. We are committed to casting a group of actors ranging in age from 10-110 that will reflect the people of our community. As the playwright, Joe Tracz, says, “[T]he characters in The Lightning Thief are gods and heroes – and gods and heroes can look like any of us.”

A FINAL WORD ABOUT CASTING: Casting is a very complex puzzle that balances the needs of the production, the requirements of each role and the educational needs of each student. Factors that may influence casting include, but are not limited to, a student’s schedule availability, focus, ensemble spirit, maturity, theatre experience and training, acting, singing, dance and movement skills, as well as a student’s previous track record working on AAC productions, camps and classes, if applicable. While AAC does not consider seniority to be a factor in casting, older students have had more opportunities to develop leadership and theatrical skills and will often be cast in larger roles. Students and parents should be aware of the potential for disappointment. If a student is not cast in the role they desire, and willing to accept the outcome of casting we are sure they will have a positive experience.
